View On Demand Webinar: Maximizing Benefits of this Popular Core

Freescale Semiconductor is the world’s leading provider of 32-bit embedded controllers; processors based on their 68K/ColdFire® architecture have been deployed in over half a billion devices.

The first core from Freescale’s ColdFire architecture is now available as synthesizable intellectual property (IP) from IPextreme. That means you can quickly and cost-effectively create your own low-power, highly-integrated, 32-bit ASIC solutions implementing the ColdFire Architecture.

The V2 ColdFire Processor is available in your choice of two different design packages:

ASIC designs based on the V2 ColdFire Core are software compatible with all ColdFire standard products and cycle accurate with Freescale V2-based devices.

Code compatibility and a shared ecosystem mean easy migration not only from 8-bit to 32-bit CPUs and through emerging generations of the ColdFire Architecture, but also from module level integration to IP core level integration.

WHY COLDFIRE?

Building upon the 68K foundation, ColdFire offers RISC performance with industry-leading code density and a rich set of connectivity peripherals. By supporting variable-length instructions (16-, 32- or 48-bits long), the ColdFire Architecture enables higher code density than traditional 32- and 64-bit RISC machines. More efficient use of on-chip memory reduces bus bandwidth and external memory requirements, resulting in lower system cost.

The ColdFire Architecture is ubiquitous in consumer and industrial applications, which means a massive base of existing application code. ColdFire controllers continue to set the pace for the embedded market—from industrial automation systems to inkjet printers and media players.

The V2 ColdFire Core is the same processor IP core proven in many Freescale MCF52xx devices.

The V2 ColdFire SPP is the identical Standard Product Platform configuration proven in Freescale’s popular MCF5208 device.

V2 COLDFIRE CORE

The V2 ColdFire Core is one of the smallest 32-bit processors available today while still providing industry leading performance. Freescale MCF52xx devices built from the V2 ColdFire Core can be found in health care instrumentation, point-of-sale terminals, factory automation, fire and security systems, and many other industrial and consumer applications. Features of the V2 ColdFire Core include:

  • Variable-length RISC, clock-multiplied core
  • 166-MHz in typical 130-nm process
  • Independent, decoupled pipelines:
    • 2-stage instruction fetch pipeline (IFP)
    • 2-stage operand execution pipeline (OEP)
    • FIFO instruction buffer is the decoupling mechanism
  • 16 user-accessible, 32-bit general purpose registers (GPRs)
  • 32-bit data bus
  • 32-bit address bus supporting 4-GB linear addressing range
  • Sophisticated two-level branch acceleration mechanisms minimize change-of-flow execution time
  • Background Debug Mode (BDM), Real-Time Trace (RTT), and Real-Time Debug (RTD) support
  • Binary object code compatibility across the entire Freescale ColdFire Family
  • Optional Enhanced Multiply-Accumulate (EMAC) provides high-speed signal processing capabilities with four 40-bit accumulators and single-cycle instruction issue rate on 32-bit MAC operations
  • Vector base register to relocate the exception-vector table
  • Integrated cache controller; cache is direct-mapped, configurable as instruction, data, or split instruction/data cache
  • Integrated SRAM controller
  • 100% synthesizable and technology-independent design
  • EDA tool-neutral packaging

The instruction fetch and execution pipelines are decoupled by an instruction buffer. Instructions can be fetched in advance, thereby minimizing stalls and accelerating throughput.

V2 COLDFIRE SPP

The V2 ColdFire SPP takes you a step further toward building a complete SoC by integrating popular peripherals from Freescale’s Standard Product Platform with the V2 ColdFire Core, providing a full ColdFire-based subsystem. The peripheral set in the V2 ColdFire SPP is identical to that proven in Freescale’s MCF5208 devices:

  • Multi-AHB crossbar switch (AXBS) connects multiple masters with various slave IP blocks
  • External Bus Interface for glueless connection to external memory devices
    • 32-bit bidirectional data/24-bit address
    • Programmable wait states
  • 10/100 Fast Ethernet Controller (FEC) with direct memory access (DMA)
    • 10/100 Mbits/s; half or full duplex
    • Media independent interface (MII)
  • Queued serial peripheral interface (QSPI)
    • Full-duplex, 3-wire synchronous transfers
    • Master mode operation with programmable bit rates
  • I2C
    • Master/slave modes support multiple masters
    • Automatic interrupt generation with programmable level
  • Three UARTs
    • RTS/CTS flow control
    • Programmable data format/parity
    • Interrupt control logic
  • eDMA controller
    • 16 programmable channels with 32-byte transfer control
    • Programmable source/destination addresses, transfer size, and enhanced address modes
  • Four 32-bit timers
    • 12-ns resolution at 83.33 MHz
    • Programmable prescaler and sources for clock input
    • Maskable interrupt and DMA trigger capability
  • Control module with software watchdog timer, wakeup control, reset status register, clock disable control for peripherals
